Background of city (location, natural resources, population): The City we will be talking about in our presentation is Naples or Napoli in Italy. We will discuss how the things we have changed to make Naples a more sustainable city. We have done eight assignments regarding Naples and we will show you  how doing these things will make it more sustainable.

The total population of the city of Naples is 1,000,449 distributed as follow:
- 0-14 years:  (579,088) or 18.76%
-15-64 years :( 2,093,764) or 67.87%
-65 years and above (412,595) or 13.37%
Total population of Italy:

1)      Results of Smart cities- 3 best and 3 worst
3 best:
    - Transportation: In Naples, they use a lot of forms of transportation like taking a train, riding a      bicycle, driving a car.
  - Green Building: There is no exact percentage but there is a trend in the country.
-Standard of living: Percentage of the median household income is small. Percentage of    owner occupied houses are also little. Percentages of families living under the poverty level.

3 worst:
 - Environmental Standards and Participation: Due to the high number of vehicles and pollution. To make this more sustainable, they should reduce the number of vehicles they use and  pollution .

    - Water and conservation:  Due to high level of sulfur dioxide, it pollutes the fresh water. To improve this, the people should start cleaning their fresh water or get the water from a different area in the country.
  - Air Quality:  In Naples, smoking is a habit except in casinos. Smoking is banned in public area, outdoor rallies, culture events, or if children or pregnant women are present. To improve this, people who smoke should stop smoking, or it could be made illegal to smoke

2)      Government Policy: Italy was a kingdom until 1946 after which it became a republic divided into 20 regions. By law Italy’s judicial system is independent from the government. Judges are not elected but they are appointed. The Italian government and local administration makes or collects money mainly from taxes which represent 63% followed by social contributions, 33 %. Italy’s government structure is good as all members of parliament, senate, and local councils are elected and are involved in decision making process. My suggestion to make this better is for government and local administration is to work together to provide more money to improve condition of houses, roads, and municipalities.
3)       Consumer Policy: Italy’s economy is an industrial one and ranked as the 8th world largest economy.  Italy has few natural resources such as natural gas. Naples is known to be exporter of fruit, vegetables, and olive oil. The country mainly exports textiles and clothing, engineering products, chemicals, and food. It trades with France, Spain, and Germany. To increase the economy of the city they should start to advertise their products more.

4)      Population Pyramid

The reasons why there is slow population growth in Naples:
-           People from Naples went north because that area has a richer economy and it is well organized.
-      Italians like  farming they didn’t want to be in the south such as in Naples was because it didn’t have good fertile soil.
-          The economy was weak so people moved to  other cities.
-          There was a move away from traditional agricultural economies to service industries.
-          Also the Mafia controls the garbage and the garbage crisis of 2007 pushed a lot of people away.
-          The great wave of emigration from Naples and other southern Italian cities to America, Canada, and Argentina in the 19th and early 20th century where over 11.1 million people migrated in total. This was called “The Neapolitan Diaspora”.

Best growth pattern for the city:
The population pyramid for the city of Naples in 100 years should be based on a growth rate of 2% (the total number of children of Italy is one of the lowest in Europe, 1.19 children per pregnant women).

To be at the pyramid above (in a 100 years) , the government of Italy should do the following:
-          Government should help families with two children and more.
-          The age of marriage should be lower like the age 16 instead of 18.
-          Create better economic infrastructure in city of Napoli ( ex: roads, telecommunication, electricity....) and  the surroundings to avoid people going to the northern cities.
-          Advertise the city of Naples as one of the most beautiful cities in Europe in order for visitors to come to the city , live in it, and turn it into a beautiful place to live in.
-          Improve buildings in the city like old to new buildings and bring more industries to the area.
-          Improve agriculture in order to create more jobs for people.

5)      City Plan: The city of Naples is divided into three main zones: the western area, the northern area, and eastern area. Naples has very old zoning and the city is not far from a volcano.  Naples also has a area that is built by unauthorized construction. The city is also historic, which means there is a lot of buildings that are very old. My zoning map is to have the following: hotels, government offices, and offices to be built on the right side of the city, agricultural and industrial areas also to be built outside the city.

The average house size in Italy is  700-1100 sq ft with 2.7 people living in it. And the type of building material they use is bad. Our plan is that the country should start building the average house with a total area of 110 m2 or 1184 sq .ft. The building material that should be used are: concrete, bricks and ceramic for the floor. Glass, aluminum for windows.Wood for doors and    kitchen.
